Salt Marsh Cottage Books Announces New Releases
News & Events
The Lowcountry of South Carolina is a uniquely lovely place, full of history, legends, and Southern charm.  As one of the few independent publishers
located in the Lowcountry, Salt Marsh Cottage Books publishes books by Lowcountry authors with appeal for both young readers and adults.
Chronicles of Life in the Midwest, by Max D. Judge, provides a delightful glimpse into a boy’
s experiences growing up on a livestock farm during the 1940s.  Appealing to both young
readers and older folks, the book centers around a diary kept by the author during his pre-
teen and teenage years.  The book provides a nostalgic view of an agrarian society, which
has largely disappeared in the United States.  It also reminds the reader that “the good old
days” were not always so good.  For example, doing laundry required first making soap!

"The book is a day-to-day glimpse into how life was on a typical Indiana farm in the 1940s. It’
s the story of many of our beginnings, or at least those of our parent and grandparents.  To
read this book is to understand something of the old ways that are no more, really, but also
of old values that never go out of style.  It will serve as a fine historical reference for all
time.  It’s also simply a good read."
                                               Donna Cronk, Neighbors Editor

The Courier-Times, New Castle, Indiana
Jane P. Hill is a native South Carolinian whose goal is to interest young readers in the history and culture of the
Lowcountry. Set in the late 1880s, history as it might have affected young people is related by ghosts and other engaging
characters. In addition to her novels, Jane Hill has also published several short stories about the Lowcountry.
In the sequel to Clarendon Island, a
family friend is accused of murder.
Fifteen-year old Charlotte and her
friends learn that knowing the
truth and having evidence that is
admissible in a court of law are two
different things, as they attempt
to prove the friend's innocence.
Complicating their struggle for
justice is the fact that their only
link to the truth is a ghost.

The Savannah Children's Book Festival 2009 was held November 14th in Forsyth Park.  This annual festival celebrates the joy of
reading, the power of the written word, and the magic of storytelling with children’s book authors and illustrators from around
the country. The festival also features arts and crafts, food, a variety of entertainment, an international tent, costumed
characters, and more.  Many Lowcountry  writers attend, who sell and sign books and discuss their books with their fans.

every home game.

The book's debut on Sunday, September 20th, coincided with the
Denver Broncos' first
home game of the 2009 season at INVESCO Field at Mile High.  The book is available at the

Norm Levy's delightful collection of light verse was released on December 4th.  Rhymes for
Our Times
is an anthology of quirky extensions of actual headlines that have appeared in
newspapers, magazines, or on the Internet.

The headline, as a compressed form of communication, seems to be especially compatible
with our cranked-up, quick-cut, low-attention-span society.  Whether newsworthy,
outrageous, or amusing, headlines invite wry commentary, and Norm has capitalized on
this, producing verses on subjects ranging from politics to crime, from science to religion.
In addition to literary works, Hilton
Headings
also contains color
photographs of the Lowcountry and
its flora and fauna. A stunning
photograph of a Lowcountry dock is
featured on the cover. The
anthology is published by
Catawba
Publishing Company of Charlotte.
The Third Annual Savannah Book Festival was held
February 5-7 at Telfair Square.  The keynote speaker
was
Vince Flynn. The Festival also featured a concert by
Mary Chapin Carpenter, who performed a tribute to
Pulitzer Prize winning Southern author,
Eudora Welty.
The 14th Annual South Carolina Book Festival was held at the Columbia
Metropolitan Convention Center on February 27-28, 2010.  Events
included book sales and signings, panel discussions, an author brunch,
and master writing classes.
Dr. Max Judge, author of Chronicles of Life in the Midwest and The Bronco Girl, was recently interviewed on WHHI's
"Lowcountry Report" regarding his upcoming book on healthy eating for children.  Max described to interviewer Jane Jude how
the book will be designed to allow a mentor, such as a school counselor or nurse, to work with a child that appears to be high
risk for health problems related to poor nutrition and obesity.  The book is due to be released in time for the opening of school
next fall.
