Heritage Library, 3rd floor of the Courtyard Building on Office Park Drive. Island Writers’ Network Minutes – Monday, November 3, 2008 Moderator Lorie Getz called the meeting of the Island Writers’ Network to order at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 3, 2008, in the Heritage Library with 19 people present. Attendees introduced themselves and told something of their writing interests and accomplishments. Program: Kathryn Wall, a founder of IWN and author of eight successful Bay Tanner mystery novels, presented a program on her road to publication. She then held a question and answer session that lasted close to an hour. Members were given the opportunity to purchase books from Kathy and have them autographed. Secretary: Sansing McPherson submitted the minutes by email and received no corrections. Jane Hill has posted them on the IWN web site. Treasurer: In the absence of Treasurer Marilyn Lorenz, Sansing reported Marilyn has made a $200 contribution to the Arts Council of Beaufort County. Our $12 dues are due. Marketing: · Lorie Getz reported that her employer, the Spa at the Marriott Grand Ocean Front, has agreed not only to sell our anthology at the Spa but also to host signing events for members. Lorie passed around brochures from the Spa. · Sansing said she talked to David Lauderdale of the Island Packet about the possibility of getting publicity in an article about holiday gifts with a local flavor. · Jane Hill and Norm Levy shared information about an Internet experiment in viral marketing. Norm will send an email to all members with a link to a website with one of his funny poems. Members are asked to forward it many people. Norm can then track the hits he gets on the website. We may be able to use this method to publicize our anthology. Open Mike: Norm Levy will be out of town on Monday, Nov. 17. Sansing will open the library that night and will send an email asking for a volunteer to facilitate the Open Mike. Service Project: Brian Baxter reported that the teachers at Hardeeville Elementary are willing and flexible about meeting times for a publishing project. They await contact by Dee Merian for dates she can visit the school to kick off the event. December Meeting is a holiday party at the home of Sansing McPherson in Hilton Head Plantation on Monday, Dec. 1, at 7:00 p. m. RSVPs are necessary so she can request gate passes. Members may bring guests. IWN will buy beverages, and members are asked to bring food. Other Business: Jane Hill reminded us of the Savannah Children’s Book Festival in Forsyth Park on Saturday, Nov. 15, from 10 a. m. to 4 p.m. Nationally known children’s authors, TV personalities, and area writers will be there. Jane will have her books there also. Thousands of people are expected. More information is available at http://www.liveoakpl.org/scbf/. Meeting adjourned at 9:00 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Sansing McPherson, IWN Secretary |
